Review of AIMS Moranbah Technology Day 2016
Our first AIMS Technology Day was held on Wednesday the 18th May. We trialled a new format of rotating workshops and hands-on sessions, instead of our normal format of technical presentations.
The day ran smoothly thanks mainly to Craig from Conference Images, coordinating both indoor and outdoor workshops spread throughout the Moranbah Community Centre complex and the neighbouring council oval. With Queensland not having a defined CPD requirement, together with the mining downturn has affected numbers in our previous QLD regional seminars. AIMS has responded by offering a low cost, regional one-day seminar focussed on technology and efficiencies. The response was excellent with 63 attendees from a majority of the mines across the Bowen Basin represented.
Live examples and demonstrations were seen including cavity monitoring systems, borehole scanners, mobile scanning, ground penetrating radar, cloud hosted datasets from remote sensing, live highwall mapping via drone, wearable backpack scanners and the latest in all types of survey equipment. Jamie Hanson from AAM took a different approach in getting his groups to identify solutions to their onsite spatial issues and provided some ideas and solutions in thinking “outside the box” including the use of unclassified data not usually supplied.
Comments from delegates and sponsors were extremely positive, and the small groups made it a more relaxed format with active participation from everyone. Callum McNaughton, our AIMS SBQ representative, ran a morning session for candidates which was also very successful and invaluable to both supervisors and those progressing with their registration.
Thanks again to everyone who attended and we hope to see you next year!
